I am a cellular microbiologist, passionate about understanding host-pathogen interactions and how we can harness insights gained from biological research to treat bacterial infection.
I am originally from Germany, where I did my BSc in Biology and MSc in Microbiology at the University of Bonn. Afterwards, I moved to the UK to do my PhD at the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection at Imperial College London with Serge Mostowy. Here, I used a variety of high-resolution microscopy techniques to investigate the role of the cytoskeleton during Shigella flexneri infection. In 2019, I joined the group of Andres Floto at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology as a Research Associate to study host defence against bacterial pathogens.
Immune cells engulf and kill bacteria inside phagosomes. However, some bacteria avoid their destruction and escape to the cytosol by damaging the phagosomal membrane. I am eager to better understand how host cells can defend themselves against these invading bacteria. To do so, I use advanced optical microscopy to follow bacterial phagosome rupture in high resolution. Additionally, I use high-content genetic screens to identify novel bacterial and host factors shaping host-pathogen interactions.
